Portugal claimed the men's European Sevens title in Moscow while Spain won the women's crown

Portugal were crowned men's and Spain women's European Rugby Sevens champions after triumphing in their respective tournaments at the FIRA championship finals in Moscow on 10-11 July.
In the men's competition, Portugal won back the title they relinquished to Russia last year by beating France 12-5 in a nervy final.

In the searing heat of Russia's capital, the Portuguese won hard-fought pool victories against Georgia, Italy and Moldova before coming unstuck against the hosts on a competitive first day of action. On day two, though, they posted a morale-boosting win against Poland and then against Spain 17-12 to reach the Cup final, while the Russians were beaten by France 19-5 in their semi final.

In the final the famous Portuguese took their chances well and then defended stoutly as the French piled on the pressure. Eventually Tomaz Morais' side edged to victory.
Georgia claimed the men's Plate and Moldova the Bowl.

In an uncanny precursor to the day's FIFA World Cup final, the Spanish ladies faced the Netherlands in the final.

The Dutch went ahead on three minutes but Isabel Rodríguez's try brought the game level at 7-7 and two converted scores by Julia Pla either side of the half put the Spanish in control at 21-7.

The Dutch hit back near the end but Raquel Socias' score put the game beyond doubt and Patricia García made it four successful kicks from four to make the final scoreline 28-12.

The Spanish had beaten Portugal, the Netherlands, Russia and Finland in pool play and overcame France in the Cup semi final.
Defending champions England suffered early pool losses to France and Italy but recovered to take the Plate with a 13-10 victory over host nation Russia. Sweden took the women's Bowl title.
