The Norsemen just visited and left. They didn't civilize nor Christianize the continent.
Barbarians can't civilize anyway. Saying that America was discovered by the vikings makes the same sense as saying that America was discovered by native Americans. It is true that they got there (although the vikings only went briefly to a tiny part of Canada) but nobody in the civilized world knew about it.
