    The Norsemen beat the Spaniards to North America by about 5 centuries or so- but their colonies didn't last. :O

    Barbarians can't civilize anyway. Saying that America was discovered by the vikings makes the same sense as saying that America was discovered by native Americans. It is true that they got there (although the vikings only went briefly to a tiny part of Canada) but nobody in the civilized world knew about it.
